What can I say …. I LOVE animals!! After all, I’ve been around them my whole life. Although I was raised in a Navy home and we moved a lot, I always found a way for animals to be a part of my life. Dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, guinea pigs, frogs, and even a chameleon when we lived in Spain.
I became a veterinary technician and always enjoyed training dogs. I moved to Tennessee in 1984 and brought with me my special friend “Scooter”. A breeder rejected Pembroke Welsh Corgi destined for euthanasia because they couldn’t get their money from him because he could not use his back legs. He was brought to the tech school I attended in Virginia to see what could be done for Scooter. I fell in love and adopted him. Lots of therapy and love for Scooter and about 6 months later, he loved to run so fast that his nickname was “Bullet”. When I moved to TN I worked at UT Vet School in the Large Animal side. After an on the job injury my days, sadly, came to an end as a tech. But I never stopped working with animals. When I got married, my husband also got 2 dogs and a horse in the package. My horse, Flashlight, used to dance with me. I loved teaching her. (She liked country music)
In 2012 I adopted a 3 legged English Setter from the Blount County Humane Society. Her name was Lady Miracle. Miracle was also my trainer dog. She helped me with certain dogs in areas of socialization, anxieties, manners, etc. She had also been a H.A.B.I.T. (Human Animal Bonding In Tennessee) Therapy dog. Miracle had been to several elementary schools as a Ruff Reading dog and worked mostly with special needs children. She also used to go to a nursing home, was a destressing dog for UT & Pellissippi students during registration/exam times and she went to Blount Memorial Hospital's Cancer Center Chemo Treatment room visiting with patients. Miracle also attended some special H.A.B.I.T. events. Miracle will always be remembered for the amazing things she did to touch other lives. Regrettably my sweet Miracle lost her battle with High Grade Mast Cell Cancer on September 11, 2017. She battled it for a little over 9 months. She was only a little over 7 years old when she lost her battle with cancer. Her memories will live on through her facebook and future published stories that I dream of sharing with others.
I have adopted several animals that no one wanted because of physical or health issues that have ended up being my best friends. I never gave up on them and they gave me a great deal of companionship for life. A couple of years ago my family's senior doxie named Hope passed away. We miss our sweet doxie. We transformed our grief into love by adopting an Australian Kelpie/Border Collie named Stella Grace from East TN Border Collie Rescue. Stella had been abused and one day away from being killed when she was rescued. She became withdrawn from her world but Miracle picked her out of the rescue when she was 2 years old. She needed to learn to trust again but in time she opened her heart back up and became a H.A.B.I.T. therapy dog visiting with chemo patients also at the Cancer Center at Blount Memorial Hospital. Stella Grace has had some health issues and is now retired from therapy dog work and spends most of her time as the family dog. She is now my daughter's personal pet and will turn 13 years old in the Fall of 2024. Stella is enjoying life and acting like a 2 year old and full of a great attitude. A few years ago I adopted a yellow lab mix from the Labrador Rescue of Knoxville when he was 8.5 months old. Andy Boone is now 7 years old and about 92lbs. He is a big teddy bear and very gentle with Stella Grace. He loves going places and meeting people.
For those individuals who would like to have their dogs to be trained and then tested for the AKC CGC (Canine Good Citizen) certification, I am an official AKC CGC Evaluator. 3 levels of CGC, including the advanced Urban level are trained and tested for.
Over the years I have been a volunteer/behavioral trainer for the Blount County Humane Society, a foster/trainer for a service dog program and foster/behavioral trainer for the Blount County Animal Center. I am a strong supporter of the Pets for Patriot Program at the BCAC. I have also do some behavioral evaluations for Adopt A Golden Knoxville and the Belly Rub Bassett Rescue.
I also consult for other rescue organizations that contact me for my assistance. I hope to help where I can in lowering the rescue and shelter pet population, trying to assist dogs to become more adoptable.
I encourage you to become an animal foster home for your local animal rescue/shelter or humane society. It will bless your life helping an animal that needs you. I'm a strong supporter of adopting shelter/rescue or humane society dogs. Many times these dogs can end up being the best friend you've ever had. Please have your pet spayed or neutered and support your local animal rescue or humane society.
God Bless You and Your Family of Pets!!
